About
Dr. Michael S. Ip is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a member of the Doheny Eye Institute. He serves as the Medical Director of the Doheny Image Reading Center, where he oversees advanced imaging research and clinical interpretation. Dr. Ip’s expertise encompasses retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and retinal vein occlusion, with a focus on clinical trials and imaging techniques that advance patient care.
Dr. Ip earned his medical degree from New York University, completed his internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, and pursued an ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He specialized further through a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the New England Eye Center at Tufts University. Before joining UCLA in 2016, he was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he co-directed the Fundus Photograph Reading Center and directed the Retina Service at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Ip has led groundbreaking studies as the National Principal Investigator for the SCORE and SCORE2 clinical trials, transforming global treatment protocols for retinal vein occlusion. His work includes over 150 peer-reviewed articles, 30 book chapters, and more than 250 national and international presentations. He is a sought-after reviewer for leading ophthalmology journals and has received the Senior Achievement Award and the Leadership Development Program Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
