Cardiac Observation Unit (7 North COU)

Our 13-bed unit provides comprehensive cardiac care to individuals with congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, pre- and post-cardiac procedures, dysrhythmias, and individuals awaiting heart transplants.

Coronary Care Intensive Care Unit (7 North CCU)

Our 12-bed intensive care unit provides complex cardiac are to patients with multiple cardiac complications, such as myocardial infarctions, congestive heart failure, congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathies, dysrhythmias, patients waiting for heart transplants, post-heart transplant patients in acute rejection and many other specialized cardiac monitoring and procedures.

Fetal Diagnostics Unit

The Fetal Diagnostics Unit provides a range of antepartum diagnostic services, including biophysical profiles and amniocentesis. The most common tests performed are the non-stress fetal-heart-rate test (NST) and measurement of the amniotic fluid index (AFI). Procedures are performed by a nurse who specializes in fetal testing.

6 West is a medical-surgical unit that provides specialized care to adult patients who require post-operative care following vascular, reconstructive plastic or orthopaedic surgery. Our 20-bed unit is also the only inpatient facility at the hospital where patients can receive state-of-the-art seizure monitoring. We use cutting-edge medical science, nursing and technology in a compassionate environment to provide patients with high-quality acute care around the clock.

Our mission in the Medical Telemetry Unit is to utilize and engage all available resources to provide the best possible care to our patients and families. Our 7 East 26-bed unit and 5EMS 13-bed unit provide complex medical care to our patients with multiple medical conditions, including renal and liver disease, respiratory and cardiac disease, and diabetes.

The staff in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital understands that this is a very difficult time for both you and your child. We understand that when children are in the PICU, they need their families close by for support, comfort and encouragement. That's why parents/legal guardians are always welcome. Child Life Specialists are also available to help your child cope with his or her stay.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

After surgery, you will be transported to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to monitor vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate, and pain). You will probably feel sleepy and confused due to the effects of the anesthesia and pain medications. The PACU nurse will be in constant watch until the effects of anesthesia diminishes. Patients typically remain in the recovery room for approximately two hours, although this time can vary from patient to patient due to their condition and bed availability.
Surgical Observation Unit (SOU)

The Surgical Observation Unit (SOU) is a specialized area designed for patients to receive additional post-operative or post-procedural care, with stays ranging from one to 24 hours. Whether you have had a surgical operation, a cardiac catheterization or other cardiac interventional procedure, or an interventional radiological procedure, our staff is trained and ready to assist you in the important first hours after your surgery or procedure to start you on your way to a successful recovery.

The TRU accommodates short-stay surgical patients, post-procedure patients and post-operative patients. While in the TRU, a team of nurses, clinical care partners, doctors and other members of the healthcare team will work together to provide a culture of caring and a healing, safe environment towards a successful recovery.

The 8ICU provides care for patients requiring hand and organ transplantation, such as liver, kidney, pancreas, simultaneous kidney/pancreas and small bowel. We also provide care for patients requiring head and neck, vascular, urological, plastic and general surgery.
