COVID-19 Trial Categories
Treatment Trials for Hospitalized Patients
This category will list all treatment trials available for those patients currently hospitalized at a UCLA Heath facility with a COVID-19 diagnosis. Treatment trials aim to test treatments or combinations of treatments which have not yet been officially approved. For example, a pharmaceutical company may have developed a new drug which it believes would be effective in the treatment of COVID-19 but must first test it on human volunteers in accordance with strict and rigorous guidelines in order to ensure that it is safe and effective.
Compassionate Use Protocols for Hospitalized Patients
This category will list the drugs for which UCLA has received compassionate use approval from the FDA to treat some hospitalized COVID+ patients. Such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with the patient’s treating physician. In certain situations, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows companies to provide their experimental drugs to people outside of clinical trials. This is referred to as compassionate use.
Treatment Trials for Non-Hospitalized Patients
This category will list all treatment trials available for those patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 but are not currently hospitalized.
Post-Exposure Prevention
This category will list all prevention trials available for healthy volunteers who have been exposed to COVID-19+ patients, either in their workplace or at their home. Prevention trials aim to find better ways to prevent people from getting COVID-19 or lower the chances that people will get it. For example, a pharmaceutical company may have developed a new drug which it believes would be effective in the prevention of COVID-19 but must first test it on human volunteers in accordance with strict and rigorous guidelines in order to ensure that it is safe and effective.
Pre-Exposure Prevention and Vaccine Trials
This category will list prevention and vaccine trials available for healthy volunteers. A vaccine trial is a clinical trial that aims at establishing the safety and efficacy of a vaccine prior to it being licensed.
Healthcare Workers and First Responders
This category will list any trials that are specifically available for healthcare workers or first responders.
Research Opportunities for Recovered COVID+ Patients
UCLA Health is working rapidly to develop new testing and treatments for COVID-19. In order to achieve our goals, we need the active participation of individuals that have had Coronavirus and recovered. This category will list any research opportunities for those patients who have tested positive and recovered from COVID-19.
All Other Research Opportunities
This category will list any COVID-19-related research opportunities that don’t fit into one of the above categories.
