UCLA Surgery Team Develops New Risk Score to Factor Chronic Illness in Post-Surgery Mortality

A research team led by UCLA Surgery faculty has developed the Comorbid Operative Risk Evaluation (CORE) score to more accurately reflect how chronic illness influences patients’ postoperative mortality risk, enabling surgeons to tailor care for pre-existing conditions and more reliably estimate overall mortality risk.

Electrical Nerve Stimulation Provides Relief for Long COVID Pain and Fatigue

A study co-led by UCLA Health’s Center for Advanced Surgical & Interventional Technology (CASIT) found that a wearable electrical nerve stimulation device can ease long COVID symptoms. The study focuses on a wearable Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) device, which delivers low-voltage electrical currents to help alleviate pain, fatigue, and mobility challenges associated with long COVID.
