Joann G. Elmore, MD, MPH

Dr. Joann G. Elmore is a professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and health policy and management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. She holds the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Endowed Chair in Health Care Delivery and also serves as Director of the UCLA National Clinician Scholars Program, a program that trains future leaders in health services research (https://uclancsp.med.ucla.edu/). She is a national leader in general internal medicine and has a distinguished career as a clinician, investigator, mentor, administrator, and educator.
Dr. Elmore received her medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine and completed residency training in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, with advanced training in epidemiology from the Yale School of Epidemiology and Public Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program. Dr. Elmore is board certified in internal medicine and serves on many national and international committees. She is Editor in Chief for Adult Primary Care at UpToDate and enjoys seeing patients as a primary care internist and teaching clinical medicine to medical students and residents.

In addition to seeing patients in the clinic, Dr. Elmore is an established investigator in the fields of epidemiology and cancer research (https://elmore.dgsom.ucla.edu/pages/). Her research interests include: diagnostic accuracy, physician variability, cancer screening (e.g., skin and breast), patient engagement (OpenNotes), and AI/machine learning (diagnostic aid tools for skin and breast pathology). Her involvement in these domains of research has provided her with an important clinical perspective to the evaluation of medical screening and diagnostic accuracy as it relates to her patients with the focus on ensuring high-quality care.
Dr. Elmore's pivotal research, with notable publications in BMJ, NEJM, and JAMA, has impacted how both clinicians and researchers approach cancer screening and the diagnostic process. Her continuous NIH funding for over 25 years underscores Dr. Elmore's long tradition of research success. She is currently Principal Investigator for three multi-center R01s, and she also has a long history of gaining support from major foundations. In addition to over 200 publications, Dr. Elmore has co-authored a textbook on epidemiology, biostatistics, preventive medicine, and public health that has been translated into several languages and is used by graduate students internationally.
