What is Voiding Dysfunction?
Voiding dysfunction is a broad term, used to describe conditions where there is inconsistent coordination within the urinary tract between the bladder muscle and the urethra. This results in incomplete relaxation or overactivity of the pelvic floor muscles during voiding (urination).
Your urinary tract includes the organs that collect and store urine and release it from your body. They are the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The lower urinary tract, which includes only the bladder and urethra, allows for storage and timely release of urine. Voiding dysfunction occurs when there are abnormalities in filling, storage and emptying of urine.
Voiding dysfunction is often described by symptoms such as frequency (urinating more than 8 times per day), urgency (strong need to urinate) and urine retention (unable to empty your bladder). The problem can affect both women and men.
