Dr. Arash Naeim, a recognized expert in health services research and Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) senior leader and Director of Informatics, has been appointed UCLA Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Research.
Dr. Naeim is an associate professor of medicine and a practicing oncologist with an focus in health services, geriatric oncology, decision making, health literacy and cancer clinical trial design in frail populations. He is the principal investigator of the UCLA site of the Athena Breast Network, a quality improvement and research project focused on screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer across the UC system. The Athena Network created and maintains an active and growing UCLA screening registry of currently over 25,000 women and 4,000 biospecimens.
Recently, Dr. Naeim led the implementation of the Velos clinical trials management system for JCCC, and as a vice chancellor for research, spearheaded campus-wide strategic planning in research informatics. He also helped develop and implement the CareConnect electronic medical record system in the UCLA Health System.
As Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Research, Dr. Naeim will oversee implementation of an institutionally mandated clinical trials management system and its integration with CareConnect. He will be responsible for overseeing a new Office of Clinical Trials Information Systems and an expanded Clinical Trials Administration Office. In addition, he will chair the Clinical Research Governance Committee to be charged with developing policies and solutions over a broad range of clinical research issues for the UCLA Campus, School of Medicine and Health System.
Dr. Naiem assumed his appointment on September 3, 2013.
Besides this new role, Dr. Naeim continues as an assistant vice chancellor for research and associate director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
