UCLA Health has received certification from The Joint Commission, a major accreditation body, for its commitment to provide high-quality equitable care to all patients.
Certification followed a rigorous evaluation that included visits to inpatient units, interviews with treatment teams and chart reviews over two days concluding on July 2, 2024.
UCLA Health is the first health system in California and the western region of the United States, and among the first nationally, to receive this certification from The Joint Commission.
Introduced in 2023, the Health Care Equity Certification by The Joint Commission recognizes hospitals leading in health care equity through assessments in five categories: leadership, collaboration, data collection, provision of care, and performance improvement.
“This recognition is made possible by the exceptional efforts of our physicians, nurses and other health care professionals and staff who collaborate every day to uphold the highest standards of clinical care and equity,” said Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System.
Hospitals included in the certification visit were Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA.
“Through our rigorous data-collection methods, which monitor patient demographics and social drivers of health, we ensure compassionate, safe and high-quality care for all patients,” said Dr. Medell Briggs-Malonson, chief of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for UCLA Health and associate professor of emergency medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “Our commitment is fortified by our collaborative partnerships and strategic initiatives aimed at achieving positive health outcomes for everyone.”
The Joint Commission is the oldest and largest independent accrediting organization that certifies thousands of health care organizations and programs, inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.
The certification serves as a national benchmark of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
