Natural EXperiments for Translation in Diabetes 2.0 (NEXT-D2)
About Us
The NEXT-D2 Study (Natural Experiments for Translation in Diabetes): Shaping the Science and Decisions for U.S. Health Policies to Prevent Diabetes and its Complications
Approximately 29 million Americans have diabetes and another 86 million have prediabetes and are at risk for progression to diabetes. Developing effective strategies at the federal, state and local levels to prevent and manage diabetes is a national priority. Public agencies and private organizations are continually implementing different programs to address these challenges, including innovations related to the 2010 passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Hector Rodriguez, PhD, MPH
Featured Investigator
National Academy of Medicine Member, Class of 2019
Dr. Hector Rodriguez was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine for his work integrating organization science theories and methods to assess the impact of health care team and primary care re-organization on patient engagement, patient experience of care, and outcomes particularly for vulnerable populations. Dr. Rodriguez is the principal investigator for the UC Berkeley team, a Henry J. Kaiser Endowed Professor and Chair in Organized Health Systems at UC Berkeley, and the Director of the California Initiative for Health Equity & Action.
Carol M. Mangione, MD, MSPH, FACP
Featured Investigator
National Academy of Medicine Member, class of 2019
Dr. Carol Mangione was elected to the National Academy of Medicine for her work pioneering the understanding of how system-level interventions, benefit design, and cost sharing affect quality and outcomes for low-income persons with diabetes. Dr. Mangione is the co-lead of the NEXT-D2 network, the co-principal investigator of the UCLA team, the Division Chief of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research, and holds the Barbara A. Levey & Gerald S. Levey Endowed Chair in medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Introducing the NEXT-D2 Network
We are the Natural Experiments in Translation for Diabetes (NEXT-D2) Consortium. Our team of researchers, clinicians, and community members lead eight different studies across the US. Our mission is to better understand which health policies and treatments help imporve diabetes care and how to prevent diabetes in the first place.
