Dr. Abemayor graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he obtained both his MD as well as a PhD degree in Biochemical Pharmacology. He was a general surgery resident in the Harvard Surgical Service of the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Following his residency training in Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA he became a faculty member, where he is now a Professor of Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Abemayor's practice is focused on the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck and the surgical treatment of disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. He is widely recognized for his expertise by his peers and is often invited as a speaker at national and international meetings to teach other head and neck surgeons the latest developments in these fields. When patients with malignant tumors are seen, they are evaluated by Dr. Abemayor, and then given the option to be further evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of reconstructive surgeons, maxillofacial prosthodontists, radiation therapists and medical oncologists. This evaluation by the multidisciplinary UCLA Head and Neck Tumor Board affords patients access to the best and most current treatment options available. The paramount goals are to optimize treatment options as well as ensure functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Dr. Abemayor has published extensively in the field of Head and Neck Surgery. He is the co-editor of a widely used textbook and is a member of the editorial board or an editorial reviewer for all of the major peer-review journals in the specialty. He is a co-investigator or co-principle investigator of several NIH funded grants, which fund several core research teams investigating the basic mechanisms of head and neck cancer and the investigation of novel techniques for early diagnosis of these tumors.
