About

Dr. Grace Deukmedjian currently practices as a pediatric hospitalist at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH). She is a UCSF HEAL (Health, Equity, Action, and Leadership) global health equity fellow alumnus and a Master of Science (MSc) in Global Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Her expertise is in global health, social justice and equity, medical education, and humanities in medicine.

Grace has global health experience in several countries for more than a decade. Most recently, she taught Rwandan medical students during their pediatric rotation, at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). Prior to this, she worked for one year in Nepal with the non-governmental organization, Possible, providing strategic guidance on health systems strengthening, protocol development and implementation, quality improvement, and medical education. Previous work has been in the Trans-Himalayan region in Northern India, post-soviet Armenia, rural Haiti and Ghana, focusing on child health, malnutrition, healthcare delivery, quality improvement, and program design and implementation.

Domestically, she has worked in several under resourced communities, including the Navajo Reservation with Indian Health Services (IHS) and the migrant farm worker population in Salinas, CA at a safety net county hospital, Natividad. At MLKCH in South Los Angeles, Grace focuses on maternal child health interventions, including the launching of an outpatient community lactation clinic in South Los Angeles. She has taught UCLA first year medical students in the art of the doctor-patient relationship and served as the UCLA DGSOM Doctoring I Associate Chair, in which she newly designed medical school curriculum around implicit bias and determinants of health.

Grace completed her undergraduate work at University of California, Irvine in Neuroscience and received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine. She trained in Pediatrics from UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.
