Steven Shoptaw, PhD

Addiction Treatment, HIV, and the intersection of the two.

Steven Shoptaw, PhD is a licensed psychologist and Director of the Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine at UCLA. He is a Professor in the UCLA Departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and is Vice Chair of Research in Family Medicine. He also holds an honorary appointment at the University of Cape Town. Dr. Shoptaw has a portfolio of work that focuses on the treatment of addiction and HIV prevention in the context of addiction in the Western U.S. where stimulant use is the single strongest predictor of HIV transmission. For over 25 years, Dr. Shoptaw has conducted a series of clinical studies in community settings that address these topics. He currently serves as Co-Principal Investigator of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network Big South-West Node where he leads development of clinical trials to treat stimulant dependence. He is Principal Investigator and Director of the Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) which promotes collaborative research, fosters networking, and supports capacity building among communities and agency partners in efforts to eliminate new HIV infections and health disparities among key populations with HIV-associated comorbidities. He is also Co-Principal Investigator of an cohort study that seeks to understand how drug use affects the immune system of HIV-positive and HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM). He previously served on the Executive Committee of the HIV Prevention Trials Network, helping set priorities and direct the network's scientific agenda and he is currently protocol chair for a study of integrated strategies for linking persons with opioid use disorder to care and prevention for addiction, HIV, HCV and to primary care. Dr. Shoptaw has on-going international collaborations with academic partners in Cape Town, South Africa and Hanoi, Vietnam taking proven strategies that have worked in the U.S. and adapting them to fit the needs in each country.
