Dr. Aung graduated from the Institute of Medicine (1) Burma, in 1998. She continued her post graduate education in the UK. She earned her Master of Science in Geriatric Medicine in Keele University, UK for her work in osteoporosis and orthogeriatrics. She has 13 years’ experience as an internist and geriatrician in the UK. She holds a fellowship status in Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, UK (FRCP).
Dr Aung subsequently continued her career in the US. She completed residency training in internal medicine at St. May Medical Center, Long Beach, California and Rheumatology fellowship at UCLA.
Dr. Aung is a general rheumatologist with interest in wide range of the rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, pseudo-gout, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, myositis, scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome, osteoporosis, inflammatory eye diseases, and various other autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Thanda Aung, an assistant clinical professor in UCLA’s Division of Rheumatology, explains there haven’t been enough studies to explain the mechanism behind the cracking noise. However, she says there are two hypotheses. The first is the popping noise “could be from the movement of all the structures” in the finger such as the bones, tendons and ligaments.
