About

Timothy F. Brewer, MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Trained as an infectious disease physician and epidemiologist, Dr. Brewer has published extensively on optimizing the prevention and control of infectious diseases in populations while also maintaining a hospital-based infectious disease practice. His research interests focus on the prevention and control of multiple drug-resistant tuberculosis, global risk factors for emerging diseases, and the improvement of worldwide outbreak surveillance programs. He has served on advisory boards and/or review panels for the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention among others.

Dr. Brewer previously was the Vice Provost, Interdisciplinary and Cross Campus Affairs at UCLA where he worked with faculty, students, the Academic Senate and senior campus administrators to establish strategic initiatives that bridge departments and Schools across the Campus, facilitating collaborations that focus the Campus' diverse expertise on society's most pressing challenges. Other leadership responsibilities include serving as the Director of Global Health Programs at McGill Medical School where he led national efforts to develop global health competencies for Canadian medical schools. As the founding Program Director for the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), he established training and capacity-building programs that have reached thousands of physicians and researchers in countries around the world. While at ISID Dr. Brewer also led the acquisition, oversight, and expansion of ProMED-mail by the Society; ProMED-mail has grown to become one of the largest publicly available outbreak reporting systems globally, and played critical roles in alerting public health officials and healthcare workers to both the SARS and COVID-19 outbreaks. Dr. Brewer is the past Chair of the Board of Directors for the Consortium of Universities for Global Health and of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Resource Group on Global Health.
