Achievement, Behavior, Cognition (ABC) Child Program
The Achievement, Behavior, Cognition (ABC) Child Program in the Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA provides psychiatric services through the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). ABC Child PHP is a time-limited, integrated program dedicated to assisting children ages 6-12 and their families to promote positive emotional and behavioral health. Our program is based upon the most current evidence-based clinical practices and integrate positive approaches to patient care.
We specialize in the assessment and treatment of a variety of psychological and developmental conditions and behaviors, including:
- Mood Disorders
- Anxiety Disorders
- OCD
- ADHD
- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Developmental Disorders
- Some Genetic Syndromes
- Difficulties with impulse control and emotional regulation
Program Information
The ABC Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a year-round program with a high staff to child ratio. Our program begins at 8:30 am and ends at 2:15 pm, Monday through Friday. Our multidisciplinary program is coordinated to create an individualized, comprehensive, and therapeutic environment.
Our multidisciplinary treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing, clinical social workers, educational consultant and assessment specialist, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, and hospital assistants.
The ABC Program provides children with:
- Individual therapy
- A behavior program designed to address your child's specific needs
- Academic instruction during the school year
- Occupational and recreational therapy groups
- Therapeutic groups, including cognitive behavioral therapy, social skills, and mindfulness
- Medication evaluation, intervention, and review as needed
- Additional services based on an assessment of your child's needs
- Psychological testing consultation as indicated
- Educational consultation, as indicated
The ABC Program provides families with:

- Opportunities to observe your child in the program
- Regular meetings with your treatment team
- Individualized positive parenting and behavioral skill building
- Parent skills and parent support groups
- Preparation with transition back into the school and community

Once you have completed the screener, a member of the intake department will reach out as space becomes available to you to discuss next steps.
Preparing for your first day at ABC Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
On your first day, parents should plan to spend your day with us. Our treatment team will meet with you throughout the day to get to know your child and your family. Please provide us with as much paperwork as you can (i.e. school reports, IEP'S, psychiatric and/or psychological assessments, neurology assessments, and their immunization record).
Your child should wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. While you meet with the treatment team, we will introduce your child to the staff and peers, daily schedule and encourage them to get started with the program. We provide lunch and snacks for the children; however, you may bring food if there are special dietary considerations or allergies.
Program FAQs
What to Bring
Each patient must wear or bring athletic shoes. Also, it is recommended that patients bring clothes appropriate for recreational therapy and sports/activities.
What not to Bring
Cameras, sharps or valuables should not be brought into program. Cell Phones, personal devices and other valuables will be secured by staff and returned at the end of the program day.
Daily Routine
Patients in the ABC Program are expected to participate in all program activities. Individual therapy is arranged during program hours by the patients in house therapist. Family Meetings and Parent Trainings are provided once weekly during program hours. Patients may also request individual time with staff as needed.
Medication
Medication that is taken during the program day must be brought in from home in the original container. This includes all prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Medications should be turned in to program Nurse upon arrival and will be administered by licensed nursing staff based on an order from their physician. Inhalers may be kept by the patient when so ordered by their physician.
Attendance and Timeliness
Patients are expected to attend the program daily. Tardiness and absences will be discussed with patients and family. If a patient is unable to attend the patient or their parents must call the program office by 8 am to notify staff.
Transportation Policy
Patients must be transported by a family member or adult friend of the family, designated ahead of time in writing. All people provided transportation must bring a form of identification. Patients may not leave the program with other patients or the parents of other patients.
Dress Code
In general, clothing should be appropriate to weather and setting. Clothing with controversial messages, slogans or pictures involving sex, drugs, alcohol, tobacco etc. is not acceptable. Kids should bring athletic sneakers and moveable clothing for sports/activities.
Phones
Cell phones are not to be used during program hours. Phones are kept at the nursing station until the end of the day.
Eating
Breakfast, snacks and lunches is provided for patients. If a patient wishes, they may bring a lunch.
Aggressiveness
Physical violence cannot be tolerated in the partial hospital setting. If a patient’s aggressive behavior cannot be managed in this program, he or she may be referred to another setting.
