Scientific Interests

Katherine L. Chen, MD, PhD, is an internal medicine physician and population health researcher who studies equity issues at the intersection of urban planning and health. Her work has highlighted how stable and affordable housing, reliable transportation, and supportive neighborhood context can shape patients' health outcomes and access to health care, including cancer treatment and prevention. She has also conducted research examining sun protection practices among families of melanoma survivors.Additional work has explored the role of health care systems in shaping social drivers of community health. Her current research focuses on the potential for federal and state housing policy to reduce disparities in the clinical and socioeconomic experiences of patients with cancer.
