Scientific Interests

Dr. Otto Martinez-Maza's research focuses on immune dysfunction and cancer, as well as AIDS pathogenesis.

A major objective of Martinez-Maza's work over the last several years has been to define HIV infection-associated immune system changes that precede, and contribute to, AIDS-associated non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma (AIDS-lymphoma). In recent work, elevated serum levels of several B cell-stimulatory cytokines, soluble cytokine receptors and miRNAs were seen in the years preceding the development of AIDS-lymphoma. In other work, Martinez-Maza's group examined the prognostic value of serum cytokines and soluble receptors measured post-AIDS-NHL diagnosis, and prior to the initiation of treatment, in studies done with the AIDS Malignancies Consortium (AMC).

Martinez-Maza is actively involved in several national and international multi-center studies of cancer or AIDS and HIV infection. He serves on the executive committees for the AMC and the Multi-center AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), is PI of the UCLA MACS site (joint with Dr. Roger Detels) and participates in Interlymph, an international consortium of researchers with an interest in the epidemiology and pathogenesis of lymphoma.
