I had in-person appointment in Encino on Tue. Aug 25th with Dr. Jarod Duvall who was assisted by Jasmin. Jasmin is confident and has outstanding patient care skills. She made the visit more pleasant and not feel like a chore. She deserves a raise. 🙂

The UCLA Health Patient Experience Team

Regarding my recent surgery,

As a 74 year old male, I'm perhaps not the easiest patient to deal with. After some procrastination on my part, I was treated for severely degenerated disc disease on August 28th at UCLA Orthopedic Hospital in Santa Monica. It's difficult to find the words to express how deeply appreciative I am to all the amazing people who were involved. I experienced the highest level of professionalism, skill and empathy at every step of the experience.

As I write this letter, I'm currently five days out of surgery. I just took a one mile walk, I'm feeling strong and relieved of most of the symptoms. I'm comforted knowing that the impinged nerves are no longer subject to the damage and the pain of severe stenosis.
The surgeon treating me was Dr. Daniel C. Lu, MD, PhD. His frankness and dedication garnered my confidence. Following Dr. Lu's methodical orders and evaluation, I was "ready" when he offered to treat me.

A big believer in congruity, I have to believe that the surgery went perfectly. I believe this because every part of the process, during my consciousness, was far above my high expectations. In the operating room, Dr. Lu was a man of dynamic energy and "in the zone". His co-neurosurgeon, Dr. Gelfand, who had patiently answered my questions earlier, was likewise energetic, sharp and in his "A game". Operating room nurse Ann, was perfect; kind and not letting anything slip by. I went under anesthesia completely confident in this team.

I apologize that I don't remember everyone's name that was involved. The anesthesiologist did a fine job; I was unaware of anything during the operation. There were two kind and attentive intake nurses, I believe Lisa was one. A very nice IV nurse Cirha set IV up as gently as possible. Let me not forget, Naomi, Dr. Lu's "Care Coordinator". She was always available, understanding and kindly responsive. On the telephone, she mirrored the overall true sense of caring.

I feel fortunate to unconditionally, and enthusiastically recommend Dr. Lu and the UCLA Orthopedic Hospital.

I'm humbled by the work and dedication that must have proceeded for such an institution and such wonderful professionals to be available.

Sincerely,

Mark M.

Dr. Roostaeian, is a stellar plastic surgeon. He closed the wound on my face, after the removal of a squamous cell carcinoma, located between my eyebrows. It was roughly the circumference of a dime. In my opinion, his skills as a plastic surgeon are unparalleled and his bedside manner was excellent. The size of the wound was traumatic for me. He made me feel extremely comfortable and was very reassuring, during the entire time he was closing the wound. It has been almost three months since Dr. Roostaeian closed my wound and each day it gets better and it is now almost unnoticeable. I feel very fortunate to be a patient of Dr. Roostaeian.

Dr. Soriano, is a stellar Dermatologic Surgeon. She removed a squamous cell carcinoma, located on my face, between my eyebrows. The size of the wound was very traumatic for me. It was roughly the circumference of a dime. The carcinoma was deep and required Dr. Soriano to repeat the procedure twice until all of the margins were clear. In my opinion, she is a skilled surgeon and she made me feel extremely comfortable. Dr. Soriano was very reassuring, during the entire surgery. She even called me the evening after my surgery to ensure I did not have any post-surgery complications. It has been almost three months since my surgery and each day the area of the surgery gets better and it is now almost unnoticeable. I feel very fortunate to be a patient of Dr. Soriano.

Dr Aldave is truly one of a kind. His CV and list of publications, as well as his training of dozens of interns and associates to take superior knowledge back to their practices and home countries, is stellar. Sometimes physicians with this sort of expertise and experience have a personality better suited to work in research or with staff rather than with patients. But Dr. Aldave is also uniquely gifted to make connections with patients on a human level, so one feels not only heard but also listened to concerning eye symptoms. I have been seeing him regularly for several years for checkups and maintenance and recently a procedure he performed was swift and seemingly almost effortless, with no complications. He supplies feedback and has his information always at the ready; also offers followup if needed, and corrects any misinformation you may harbor. All the things you would expect and need from a well trained, "good doctor." It goes without saying that patients being treated for eye conditions need to feel at ease with and trust the doctor "touching their eyeballs" and he is definitely the all around correct person for this job. He just gives you his all. UCLA does well to count him among its physicians.

I feel I have excellent care from all of my doctors at UCLA. My primary care doctor, Michael Estee is great, but I must give kudos to Dr. Karim Chamie who has provided excellent care for me.

Dr Finn took on my cancer treatment with a new clinical trial after I had been given the "there is nothing we can do except to treat your cancer with quality of life medications" speech from another cancer doctor. Dr Finn has been nothing but an inspiration and healing angel since taking on my cancer treatment a year and a half ago. He enthusiastically met with me and accepted me onto his clinical trial on very short notice and made sure I was able to participate in an upcoming trial that started 1 week from my first visit with him. Since being treated, I have seen remarkable improvements in my condition. He is up front, meticulous, kind, empathetic, and always very considerate. Thank you so much Dr. Finn! We are so blessed to have you as our doctor.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Sovich and saw how she communicated and helped my patient and the family with so much compassion and care. She provided the highest quality of care and educated the patient in such a way that helped them arrive at a decision that best benefits the patient. She has a heart of gold and I want to let her know how she's doing such a great job!

Dr. Francy S.

Dr. Francy Shu has been my Neurologist since fall of 2019. She is knowledgeable, very intelligent, compassionate, fully engaged and willing to look at your illness from all angles. Dr. Shu is a great listener and answers any questions that you may have. She ordered and performed the tests that confirmed my diagnosis and we have a solid plan of care, which is state of the art. That is a big deal to me because I could not seem to get that done in San Diego, despite 3 years, multiple doctor visits, and increasing pain.

I am so fortunate to have found Dr. Shu and I am happy to travel to UCLA for such excellent care, I am also grateful for being able to tele-visit.. Brittany, Dr. Shu's coordinator, is exceptional and compassionate as well. I highly recommend UCLA Neurology and Dr. Francy Shu.

The most incredible webinar I have ever attended. It speaks volumes to the effort UCLA put forward in informing the patients. The quality of Physicians on the staff. I appreciate being kept informed of information on products that I use over the counter.

Elysia was friendly and fun during my ER stay and her personality really helped me stay calm despite the serious situation.

Mithun M.

Mithun was incredibly efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly during my time in the ICU. He helped me get a first grasp on my new diabetes diagnosis and even managed to do my first night of regular blood glucose and other tests with so little trouble that I was able to go right back to sleep each time.

By: Richard W.

Dr. Benedict Tiong

Dr. Tiong was an amazing dr who was kind, gentle, yet so thorough in diagnosing the complexities of my case. I appreciated all the effort the whole staff went thru to get all my tests done. His calm thoughtful management was such a great experience.
