HumAnes of UCLA: Garrett Snyder

First off, thank you so much for your willingness to share your story. Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
I was born and raised right here in Los Angeles County, more specifically in Santa Clarita Valley. I lived there until I graduated high school, after which I moved to Ventura County for college.
Where in the city do you live? Why did you choose that area?
I currently live in Santa Monica. I chose that area because I wanted to have a short commute to work, and I really enjoy living next to the beach. It also helps to be able to run in a cooler area. Running in the valley was fun, but when it reaches 120 F, you start rethinking your living situation.
How long have you been working in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM)?
I first started working in the DAPM almost two years ago and have been working at UCLA for a total of 8 years.
What has been your favorite part of working in the UCLA DAPM?
My favorite part about working in this department is the people. Everyone has been nothing but kind and welcoming since the day I started, and I have built strong friendships with a lot of the staff and faculty here.
What do you like to do for fun outside of work? What are your hobbies?
Some of my favorite things to do outside of work are playing soccer and football, running, hiking, camping, wakeboarding, snowboarding, and honestly anything outdoors. I have played soccer my entire life and currently still play for a competitive league in Los Angeles. I also play a few other recreational sports for fun.
Do you have any pets?
I currently do not have any pets, but I am an uncle to a dog that is a mix of Great Dane and Cane Corso. I foster puppies for the LaBelle Foundation in Los Angeles and plan on adopting from their foundation in the coming years.
What are you planning to do on your next vacation?
My next vacation is traveling to Thailand at the end of the year. Hoping to swim with elephants and eat a lot of delicious food.
What are your plans for Halloween? Any plans to dress up?
I will actually be traveling to NYC for Halloween this year. It's my first time visiting NYC, and while I have no current plans to dress up, I’m sure my friends will convince me to throw something together last minute.
Do you have any favorite movies that you try to re-watch during the holidays? If so, which ones, and why?
Hocus Pocus is a classic movie I always watch during the month of October. For Christmas, the list goes on and on, but The Grinch with Jim Carrey is definitely in my Top 3.
