HumAnes of UCLA: John Brumm, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor
Where did you grow up?
Cincinnati OH
What inspired you to become an anesthesiologist?
I was a prelim general surgery resident and was not enjoying it. Every day in the Ors, I saw this one attending who was always in a good mood, so I asked what he did. He was an anesthesiologist. At that point, I just wanted to do what happy people did; so instead of applying for a categorical general surgery position, I switched to anesthesiology.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
The people.
Why did you decide to move to Los Angeles?
I did my regional fellowship at UCLA in 2019-2020 and enjoyed it. After returning to NYC and marrying my wife, we decided that we did not see a long-term future there. I suggested LA. We visited. She liked it. Then we moved.
Tell us a little about your family (including any pets).
My parents and older brother still live in Cincinnati. My wife Taylor and I just got a golden retriever named Ginger Vegas Brumm (we picked her up from Las Vegas).
What do you like to do in your free time?
Watch college football and some Bravo. Go to Home Depot Garden Center.
Do you have a go-to TV show that you love?
Other than sports, Southern Charm and Summer House.
What is your biggest anesthesia pet peeve?
Make sure the IV is working.
