UCLA Pediatric Anesthesiology and Informatics at SPA-AAP 2024

March 28 - March 30, 2023 | Theodora Wingert, MD

UCLA DAPM had an excellent turnout at this year’s Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, in March 2024. With four posters, a seminar, and many current faculty and residents in addition to graduated resident and fellow physicians in attendance, the conference was definitely a success!

The events began with the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society (CCAS) meeting. This meeting is a unique opportunity for clinicians and researchers who care for children with congenital heart disease to come together and share experiences and expertise. With UCLA’s large population of children with congenital heart disease, it is an important meeting and opportunity to stay up to date. At this meeting, Ryan McWhirter, MD, MS, gave an excellent presentation on “Continuous Stellate Ganglion Blockade as Temporary Rescue for Torsades de Pointes and Ventricular Fibrillation in a Child with Congenital QT Syndrome.” Theodora Wingert, MD, shared the department’s innovative, technology-driven quality improvement efforts for children with congenital heart disease at UCLA.

The main SPA-AAP meeting began the next day, with lectures ranging from neurodevelopmental outcomes, one-lung ventilation techniques, environmental impact, to caring for children on the autism spectrum. During this meeting, Dr. Wingert and Lindsay Brown, MD, moderated and led a session titled “Database Logistics for Anesthesiologists: Cultivating the Skills to Navigate Registries and Multicenter Studies.” In this interactive session, Lisa Lee, MD, went over practical elements involved in creating a multi-institutional data repository. Meredith Kato, MD, from Oregon Health Sciences University discussed the importance of and challenges inherent to data validation and the preparation of datasets for analysis. Annery Garcia-Marcinkiewicz, MD, from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia shared real-life experiences of challenges and triumphs in multi-institutional research endeavors. And Dr. Wingert brought the concepts together by summarizing the importance of data science in all these aspects of multi-institutional research efforts.

Excellent posters were presented at SPA-AAP as well. Matthew Lum, MD, presented a riveting case report detailing “Emergent Bedside Esophageal Isolation for Tracheoesophageal Fistula in a Premature Infant with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.” Michael Van Tienderen, DO, gave an outstanding presentation of a challenging cardiac case. Drs. McWhirter and Wingert also presented their work at SPA-AAP. During all these presentations, listeners were incredibly engaged, interested, and supportive.
