Operating Rooms
Four fully equipped, specially designed operating rooms and a laser unit at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute are available for ophthalmic surgery of all types. The ophthalmic surgery suite accommodates special instruments, such as operating microscopes with attached video cameras to record procedures, phacoemulsification units, comprehensive vitreoretinal surgery equipment, and endoscopic viewing systems. Available lasers include an adjustable dye laser, neodymium-YAG laser, diode laser, and excimer laser. Additional laser units are involved in protocol studies. The surgical area has space and facilities for patient preparation, anesthesia induction, surgery, and immediate postoperative recovery, in addition to a variety of essential supporting activities.
Patient Examination Suites
The Institute's patient examination suites provide congenial patient reception areas and include fully equipped and self-contained patient examination units. The examination units, specifically designed to promote the patient's comfort during eye care visits, are furnished with electrically adjustable chairs. Diagnostic and therapeutic equipment is mounted on an adjacent stand and arranged around the patient. A complete and precise ocular examination can thus be performed while the patient remains comfortably in one location. A centrally automated unit is available for visual acuity testing, automated perimetry, electronic refraction, pneumotonometry, and other advanced ophthalmic examination procedures.
University Ophthalmology Associates
University Ophthalmology Associates is a multi-specialty group practice that provides medical and surgical care in all ophthalmic subspecialty areas. Its Contact Lens Service offers general vision care, as well as difficult and special contact lens fittings. Participation of Institute ophthalmologists and optometrists is supported by the rotation of community-based faculty, ophthalmology fellows and residents.
