Overview

The one-year Rhinology and Skull Base fellowship will provide advanced subspecialty training in medical management of complex paranasal sinus inflammatory disorders, revision sinus surgery, orbital surgery, cerebrospinal fluid leaks and encephalocele repair, and minimally invasive approaches to the skull base for resection of benign and malignant sinonasal and intracranial neoplasms.

Our current rhinology practice provides sophisticated multi-disciplinary care in these areas in the setting of a top-ranked, tertiary care academic medical center in beautiful Southern California. Training also includes basic science and clinical research opportunities, office-based rhinology, and ample educational teaching opportunities for the medical students and residents.

Description

The UCLA rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery fellowship is a 1-year program designed to provide a comprehensive training experience to prepare participants for a career in academic rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery.

Fellows will participate in a busy tertiary rhinology practice that is supported by a strong institutional network of regional, national, and international referrals. A major emphasis will be placed on performing endoscopic skull base surgery and orbital surgery through collaborations with world-renowned neurosurgeons and oculoplastic surgeons at UCLA.

It is expected that fellows will participate in resident teaching and attend rhinology case conferences, as well as make educational presentations within the department. Research and presentation at national meetings is an important part of the Fellowship.

Weekly Schedule: Surgical experience is provided on a regular schedule 3 days each week, which includes a balanced distribution of rhinologic, paranasal sinus, orbital, and skull base surgery. Care of patients in the office setting occurs 2 days each week. The fellow makes hospital rounds on post-surgical patients on the weekends.

Diversity of Cases: Currently, inflammatory paranasal sinus disease is 70% of the case load. Orbital and skull base surgeries is approximately 30%. We expect fellows to graduate with over 450 cases per year.

Call Schedule: 1-2 weeks every 3 months.

Duration: 1 year (July to June).

Additional Information: The fellowship offers excellent salary support and University benefits at the PGY-6 level.
