What was your favorite community medicine experience? "For one of our +2 community engagement sessions we visited CTRS (Care Treatment and Rehabilitation Service). This is a temporary shelter site where there are "tiny homes" on the VA's North campus where many of our HPACT patients live. During this session I was able to visit one of my primary care patients who had missed a couple of recent appointments. He shared with me that this was the first time he had become unhoused and spoke about the physical, medical, social, and mental challenges surrounding this change. By the end of our visit he let us know how much it meant to him that we visited him at CTRS. In subsequent visits at HPACT he let me know that this initial outreach at CTRS made him feel less alone and helped him believe that his providers at the VA were going to be a genuine source of support for him. For me, it was beautiful to see how having this opportunity to engage with a patient outside of the clinic made a positive impact on his care and trust in our system."

What made you choose this program? "My family is in LA county and that was a huge part of my choice. Plus the residents I met and spoke with about coming here seemed smart, kind, and really happy!"
What has been your favorite clinical moment so far? "Hearing from one of my patients that they stopped smoking cigarillos since our last meeting! We had spent time on our first visit talking about the health effects of smoking and strategies for quitting-- hearing their pride and happiness when they told me they hadn't picked up a cigarillo for the past month and the high-five we gave each other afterwards is definitely my favorite moment."
