The Division of Nephrology is regarded as one of the top nephrology programs in the United States and is currently ranked #3 nationally by the U.S. News and World Report. It is comprised of physicians from the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRUMC), UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica (SM), and the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VA GLAHS).

The Kidney Transplant Program is one of the largest in the United States and performs over 300 kidney transplants annually while maintaining over 2000 candidates on its waiting list. The program is regarded as the pioneer of tissue typing, and assays developed at UCLA for histocompatibility are now widely used around the world. Patient and graft survival outcomes consistently rate among the best in the United States.

Fellowship Overview

Starting July 1, 2017, the UCLA Nephrology Fellowship Training program will become the UCLA-VA Nephrology Fellowship Training Program. An integrated training program where trainees will have the opportunity and benefit of rotating through the RRUMC and the VA GLAHS.

The new fellowship program will pool the strengths of each individual program into a single academically superior program that will provide new trainees with a wide range of diverse educational experiences. Nephrology fellows will be able to take advantage of the resources at each institution, thereby optimizing their educational experiences with the highest caliber of nephrology faculty in each institution. Trainees will be exposed over a two-year period to patient populations that are culturally and economically diverse.

Our program's greatest strength is our ability to provide both exceptional clinical and research training, depending on the fellow's interest. The clinical training program is rigorous, with a focus on high patient acuity and complexity of care. Fellows have the option of pursuing advanced research training at the PhD level in basic science and health services research or at the masters level in clinical research under the mentorship of nephrology faculty with expertise in each area.

The combined program is led by Dr. Mohammad Kamgar. The Co-Program Directors are Dr. Igor Kagan, Dr. Basmah Abdalla and Dr. Mandana Rastegar.
