The Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program, offers a Transplant Fellowship, accredited by the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Nephrology. This fellowship is one year and is designed for trainees who have completed a standard two-year renal fellowship and are Nephrology board eligible. The fellowship also fulfills UNOS requirements for designation as a Transplant Physician at UNOS accredited transplant programs. During their year at UCLA, fellows will receive broad, "hands-on" experience and training in all clinical aspects of kidney and pancreas transplantation. They are also given the opportunity to participate in the evaluation and care of liver and heart transplant patients. Designated time is spent in pathology; histocompatibility; and at OneLegacy, the local organ procurement organization.

The fellowship also provides the opportunity for electives and involvement in clinical and basic research. The program has an extensive database and is involved in the evaluation of new immunosuppressive agents and combinations of them. A second research year may be available depending on funding. The Transplant Fellow attends national AST sponsored educational programs as well as national transplant and nephrology meetings.

The best reflection of the quality of the transplant fellowship comes from the impact it has had on the professional careers of its graduates. Most of our transplant fellows have become transplant physicians at premiere academic programs around the country. Each has had the opportunity of choosing between multiple attractive offers of employment: a fact that attests to the high regard in which our transplant program is held by our colleagues.
