The Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, is the home of the country’s first medical school and public hospital. This is a preeminent tertiary medical center teaching hospital and prides itself on providing exemplary medical services with interdisciplinary, comprehensive, and compassionate care. As a leading medical institute accredited with international standards, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital is eager to share global perspectives on education, health care and research. Many of the faculty and residents spend time training internationally and are comfortable conducting rounds and teaching in English.
Pediatric residents from UCLA will have the opportunity to round with the pediatrics team on busy general pediatrics wards and in the afternoons can observe in subspecialty clinics, including infectious disease, hematology, endocrinology, emergency care, etc. This is a tremendous opportunity to see tropical infections, HIV/AIDS, opportunistic infections, vaccine preventable diseases, thalassemia, and many other conditions in a global setting with tertiary care facility diagnostic and treatment capabilities. The pediatrics department at Siriraj Hospital conducts bedside rounds and provides outstanding patient-family centered care.
Bangkok is a beautiful place to visit and is the capital city and largest urban area in Thailand. Visitors may initially be overwhelmed by the heat, humidity, traffic, and chaos of the city but quickly discover the warmth of the people, delicious Thai food and tropical fruits, and beautiful architecture. Bangkok is a tropical metropolis that is also one of the most traveler-friendly cities in Asia with opportunities for inexpensive weekend travel within Thailand to beautiful beach areas of Phuket and the historical city of Chiang Mai.
Your local mentor in Bangkok is Dr. Wanatpreeya Phongsamart, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Disease, an amazing clinician and educator. UCLA also welcomes many residents from Siriraj annually and this is an opportunity to work with one of our truly bilateral institutional exchanges. UCLA residents who have gone for Big E in Thailand can have the opportunity to work with Siriraj residents in the US. There is no language requirement and approximate expenses $2500.
