At UCLA Health, we offer a team of experts for women seeking a solution to excessive bleeding and cramping due to heavy periods. We understand that heavy menstrual bleeding can negatively impact your quality of life. Working together to address your specific concerns and provide treatment recommendations tailored to your needs, we offer unique solutions for your care. We are proud to offer the latest technology in minimally invasive treatment options, including the Cerene® Treatment.
What is The Cerene® Treatment?
Cerene® is an endometrial ablation treatment that uses cooling technology (cryotherapy) to treat the lining of the uterus (endometrium). This results in a reduction of heavy menstrual bleeding and cramping.
Cerene® FAQ
- Eligible Cerene® candidates are women who no longer plan on having children and or those who are premenopausal.
Contraception is still needed after the Cerene® procedure. Cerene® can be performed in your provider's office with minimal downtime. The procedure itself is typically under 15 minutes and most patients return to their normal activities within 24 hours of their treatment. Due to the usage of cryotherapy, Cerene® is less painful than other traditional endometrial ablation techniques.
Cerene® is designed to lessen heavy menstrual flows and decrease the severity of cramps. Cerene® does not prevent adequate future assessment/biopsies of the uterine lining if needed, which has previously been an issue with endometrial ablation technologies.
Soaking through a pad or tampon every two hours or less and/or bleeding that lasts longer than seven days is considered heavy menstrual bleeding. Heavy menstrual bleeding affects 1 in 5 women.
Yes, it is FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved for use in premenopausal women with heavy menstrual bleeding due to benign causes for whom childbearing is complete.
Cerene® is often covered by insurance if it is medically necessary. After consulting with your UCLA Health specialist and deciding that Cerene® is a good option for you, we will work with your insurance to check for coverage.
