Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure commonly used for diagnostic purposes. It allows the doctor to directly visualize the contents of the abdomen and pelvis. Laparoscopy is often performed to evaluate for the presence of fluid, hernias, bowel obstruction, or cancer. One or several small cuts are made on the abdomen to introduce a laparoscope (video camera) and other instruments to assist in the procedure. This minimally invasive approach results in smaller incision, less pain, and faster recovery.
