What is CenteringPregnancy?

The CenteringPregnancy Program at UCLA Health Obstetrics and Gynecology takes pregnant people out of exam rooms and into groups for their prenatal care with other expectant parents who are at the same stage of the pregnancy journey.

CenteringPregnancy started in the 1990’s when a nurse-midwife brought pregnant women together for their prenatal visits to provide more comprehensive prenatal care to her patients and that sparked a movement. There are now Centering programs in 45 states across the country.

How does CenteringPregnancy work?

The initial pregnancy exam and medical history in-take are done in one of our UCLA Health OBGYN clinics. You can then choose to join a CenteringPregnancy group with other expectant parents who have similar due dates.

Groups are formed between 12 and 16 weeks of pregnancy and meet regularly throughout the pregnancy. Each two-hour appointment is led by expert obstetric providers including doctors, nurse midwives, residents, nurses and other specialists. Each visit includes health check-ups such as belly checks and blood pressure testing, as well as group discussion on a range of educational topics that are of interest to the group. Each visit follows nationally recognized pregnancy guidelines.

The groups continue to meet through the postpartum period to help provide parental support.

What are the benefits of CenteringPregnancy?

The CenteringPregnancy group sessions provide a supportive and comfortable setting for participants to discuss shared health concerns and expectations.

These groups promote:

  • Better health outcomes for you and your baby
  • Increased breastfeeding rates
  • More time with your provider
  • Deeper connections with your care team
  • Patient empowerment through education
  • Self-care and healthy family connections
  • Community building with other pregnant group members
