Mitra Nejad, MD is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is Board Certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology and now specializes in advanced surgical procedures for cataracts and laser vision correction.
Education:
Dr. Nejad graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S in Physiological Sciences from UCLA and earned her MD from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She completed her internship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, then ophthalmology training at UCLA Stein Eye Institute, where she remained on staff after completion of her residency. During her first year of practice, she did additional post-graduate training in the field of refractive surgery, gaining proficiency in both LASIK and PRK procedures as well as the management of rare, complicated disorders.
Specialties:
Dr. Nejad utilizes the full spectrum of the latest technology available for treatment of cataracts including femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, advanced technology lenses (toric, multifocal, and extended-depth-of-field), as well as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) at the time of cataract surgery. She is a certified proctor for LASIK and PRK surgery, and was one of the first physicians at Stein Eye Institute to perform SMILE surgery.
Research and Teaching Interests:
In addition to teaching medical students at the David Geffen School for Medicine at UCLA, Dr. Nejad trains the current Stein Eye Institute residents in cataract surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Her teaching interests have led to a Medical Education Fellowship as well as her role as the Associate Program Director of the UCLA ophthalmology residency program. Her clinical research in cataract and refractive surgery have led to number of publications in major journals.
Dr. Nejad serves as mentor to a number of trainees each year and reminds them what a gift it is to restore vision and help improve quality of life. She encourages them to follow the rule she has set for herself and her practice: treat every patient as if they were family, with unwavering patience and compassion.
