A facelift or rhytidectomy, is performed to improve the overall appearance of the face by removing or minimizing sagging skin and wrinkles. The surgeon begins the incision in the area of the temple hair just above and in front of the ear, and continues it around the lobe, circling the ear before returning to the point of origin in the scalp. In all cases, the incision is placed where it will fall in the natural crease of the skin for camouflage. The skin is raised outward before the surgeon repositions and tightens the underlying muscle and connective tissue. Some fat and excess skin may be removed.
Following surgery, patients will experience bruising and swelling. Temporary post-surgical nursing options should be considered. This surgery is not medically necessary and, in most cases, is not covered by insurance.
