Children requiring high level critical care services are cared for in dedicated intensive care units at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital:
-
18 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU provides all critical care support for our busy programs in medicine, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, craniofacial reconstruction, organ and bone marrow transplantation and trauma, among others.
-
6 beds Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTICU). The PCTICU cares for infants and children with the full spectrum of cardiac disease including a large cardiomyopathy and heart failure population who often require mechanical circulatory support with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or ventricular assist devices (VAD).
Both units are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and other staff with specialized training in the care of critically ill children. Our focus is to provide family-centered care that promotes healing and family support. Child Life services, nutrition services, occupational and physical therapy all play an important role in providing comprehensive care.
