The Pediatric Gastrointestinal Motility Center at UCLA evaluates, treats and follows patients who have a variety of different gastrointestinal motility disorders including gastroesophageal reflux, gastroparesis, achalasia, dysphagia, severe recurrent abdominal pain, intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome, eosinophilic esophagitis, chronic constipation and fecal incontinence.
Using state-of-the-art equipment, the Motility Center performs a wide range of motility tests, including esophageal manometry, anorectal manometry, colonic manometry, high resolution manometry, anorectal biofeedback therapy, esophageal pH studies including pH impedance and wireless pH testing (BRAVO), electrogastrography and breath testing.
Gastric emptying studies are performed by UCLA's Nuclear Medicine Department and are used to measure the flow of solid or liquid meals for patients with unexplained nausea or vomiting. Colonic transit studies are performed by UCLA's Radiology Department and are used to measure the movement of radiopaque markers through the colon, for patients presenting with chronic constipation.
Referrals to the Pediatric Gastrointestinal Motility Center must be made by a treating gastroenterologist. The referral, along with supporting medical records, should be faxed to the Pediatric Gastroenterology administrative office at fax number (310) 206-0203. For those patients being referred by their primary care physician, an initial consultation will be arranged with a pediatric gastroenterologist at UCLA before any studies are scheduled.
