What is Scarless Thyroid Surgery?
Scarless Thyroid Surgery - Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA)
Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA) is a minimally invasive surgical technique for thyroidectomy, which involves removing all or part of the thyroid gland. Unlike traditional thyroidectomy procedures that leave a visible scar on the neck, TOETVA is designed to be scarless as the incisions are made inside the mouth, in the vestibule (the area between the lips and gums).
- TOETVA is primarily indicated for patients with benign thyroid nodules or small, low-risk thyroid cancers.
- It may not be suitable for all patients, and eligibility is determined based on factors such as the size and characteristics of the thyroid nodules or cancers.
Approach and Advantages:
- The surgery is performed through small incisions made inside the mouth, avoiding any external neck incisions.
- Instruments and a small endoscope are inserted through these incisions to access and remove the thyroid gland.
- Cosmetic Outcome: One of the main advantages is the avoidance of visible neck scars, providing a more cosmetically appealing result.
- Reduced Pain and Recovery Time: Patients may experience less postoperative pain and a quicker recovery compared to traditional open thyroidectomy.
- Less Disruption to Surrounding Structures: The procedure is designed to minimize trauma to nearby structures such as muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.
The Procedure:
- The surgeon makes small incisions in the oral cavity and inserts an endoscope and specialized instruments to access the thyroid gland.
- The thyroid is removed in a step-by-step fashion, and the surgeon carefully avoids damaging surrounding structures.
Considerations:
- The suitability of TOETVA depends on the size and type of thyroid nodules or cancers, as well as the patient's overall health.
- Some cases may still require traditional open surgery, particularly for larger or more complex thyroid conditions.
The surgery is performed through small incisions made inside the mouth.
At the Center for Endocrine Surgery Los Angeles we believe it is essential for individuals considering thyroid surgery to discuss their specific case, concerns, and preferences with their healthcare provider. The choice of surgical approach depends on various factors, and the decision should be made collaboratively between the patient and the surgical team.
