Dr. Beth Karlan, director of cancer population genetics at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been selected to serve as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines Steering Committee Chair.
The NCCN is a non-profit alliance of 33 leading cancer centers in the United States devoted to patient care, research and education.
In this role, Karlan, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the department’s vice chair of women’s health research, is responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, and dissemination of clinical practice guidelines for cancer care. These guidelines are comprised of evidence-based recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of malignancies across the continuum of cancer care.
“I’m honored to have this opportunity to chair the NCCN Guidelines Steering Committee and I’m looking forward to working with my esteemed colleagues from across the country,” said Karlan. “NCCN’s guidelines committees play a crucial role in ensuring that healthcare providers have access to up to date, high-quality, evidence-based guidance to inform their decision-making in cancer care.”
Karlan has held numerous leadership roles during her career. She has served as president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and editor-in-chief of Gynecologic Oncology, the leading scientific journal in the field. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Cancer Policy Forum, as well as an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor.
