UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital ranks among the nation's top pediatric hospitals in nine categories:
Cancer, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Heart & Heart Surgery, Kidney, Neonatology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and Urology.
UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital ranks among the nation's top pediatric hospitals, according to the U.S. News Media Group's annual survey of the finest pediatric facilities in the United States.
The 2010–11 edition of "America's Best Children's Hospitals" is currently available online and will be published in the August print issue of U.S. News & World Report, on newsstands July 27.
The survey is the most extensive listing of its kind and includes hospital rankings in 10 pediatric specialties. Nationally, Mattel Children's Hospital was recognized for excellence in nine of the 10 categories, including gastroenterology (ranked No. 7), kidney disorders (7), diabetes and endocrinology (11), heart and heart surgery (17), neurology and neurosurgery (19), cancer (20), orthopedics (22), urology (27) and neonatology (29).
"We are proud that UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital was ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals, with special note to our gastroenterology program, which was ranked the highest on the West Coast," said the hospital's physician-in-chief, Dr. Edward R.B. McCabe, who holds the Mattel Executive Endowed Chair in the UCLA Department of Pediatrics. "We are also proud of our diabetes/endocrinology, kidney, and neurology/neurosurgery programs, which rated among the top two within the state of California. In addition, our cancer, heart/heart surgery, and orthopedics programs were ranked in the top three statewide. Great care and compassion is delivered to the children and families at Mattel Children's Hospital every day, and these rankings are a salute to our dedicated doctors, nurses and staff."
For the 2010–11 rankings, U.S. News and World Report worked with the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), and asked 170 pediatric centers to complete a 75-page online survey. More than 80 medical directors, department chairs, infection specialists and other experts, grouped by specialty, helped update and enhance the magazine's 2010–11 survey. RTI International, a research and consulting firm that also oversees the magazine's "Best Hospitals" rankings, reviewed the recommendations.
Whether a hospital was ranked, and how high it ranked, depended on how well it did in three areas: reputation, medical outcomes (such as cancer survival) and care-related indicators of quality (such as the number of patients, nurse staffing and availability of specialized programs). Medical outcomes and care-related indicators were made up of scores of fine-grained measures. The U.S. News & World Report website offers a detailed description of the methodology.
