Brittany Burton, MD, MHS, MAS, and Cristianna Vallera, MD, Awarded 2023 SOAP Diversity & Inclusivity Mentored Grant

CA-3 resident physician Brittany Burton, MD, MAS, MHS, and mentor Cristianna Vallera, MD, have been selected by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) to receive the 2023 SOAP Diversity & Inclusivity Mentored Grant for their proposal, “Machine Learning Approaches to Predict Postpartum Hemorrhage for Cesarean Delivery.”

The SOAP Diversity & Inclusivity Mentored Grants provide the funding needed to foster diversity of the SOAP membership and support the careers of diverse SOAP members through mentorship. The grant will provide up to $5,000 over a one-year period.

Drs. Burton and Vallera aim to use machine learning to identify patients at risk for postpartum hemorrhage and then use the electronic medical records to prompt people to take steps to mitigate risk. They will utilize this seed grant to see if this concept can be a workable model to help combat unconscious bias as a factor in maternal morbidity and mortality.
