A "Thank You" to all Healthcare Workers

If you could please forward the below message on to whatever department is best (possibly HR?) I would love for them to forward my message, below, to EVERYONE in the hospital as you ALL have gone through so much this year! Thank you!

(Please forward the message, below, to all)

Hi! My name is Katie Kostner and I am a Junior in high school. I know that healthcare professionals have been working around the clock due to the pandemic leaving them very little, if any, time for themselves or for the holidays. Though Christmas is over, I wanted to share a video I made recently for our HEROES--those working in the hospitals to care for us!
In the YouTube link in this message, I share my most heartfelt thanks and appreciation for ALL healthcare heroes! Nurses, Doctors--all of the teams who are working tirelessly during 2020 to care for so many. I also share two holiday songs I've been working on as a small "thank you" for all you have done and to let you know I, and so many others, are thinking of you during the holidays.

I hope you enjoy this short video I recorded! And, please--forward it on to everyone you know so everyone gets thanked! I would love for this video to reach as many people as possible this holiday season!

Please stay safe--
Katie Kostner

I would like to commend several of the nurses who cared for my father recently, when he spent a week at UCLA hospital under palliative care; Kara Holland, RN; Alana Connor, RN and Amanda (I'm unsure of her last name). Each one of the nurses was very kind, caring, compassionate, available immediately for any questions and concerns, and very dedicated nurses. They all took incredible care of my dad who was experiencing heart failure, and were so kind and loving to my family. I kept wondering if during the UCLA interview process of nurses, if the #1 question is: Are you a kind and compassionate person? I bet it is the #1 questions!

Had the best experience yesterday with the entire staff, especially Nurse Ingrid and Doctor Pauline Yi. I had been referred to Dr. Yi after a couple of failed and disappointing checkups with other Primaries, and I couldn't be happier that I *finally* had a pleasant experience. The COVID check-in lady was super sweet, the front desk girls were very friendly, Nurse Ingrid was extremely understanding, and Dr. Yi is obviously knowledgable and informative, but also realistic. I really appreciate how accommodating the entire staff was to my anxieties around doctor's office visits. Very thankful for the relief they gave me today - actually looking forward to coming back, and I never thought I'd be able to say that!

My appointment was on 12-7-20 and I just want to let you know the exemplary service that I received from Natalin. She knew how sick I was from vertigo. She took extra time with me by not rushing me, and letting me be at ease with each movement I had to do. She was so sensitive and kind and I would love someone to acknowledge her actions that were above and beyond.

My mother needed to have a test done. She has COPD, and under normal circumstances, I would be there to assist. But with Covid, I was unable to accompany her. I worried that the long walk through the medical plaza would be difficult. When we arrived, I explained the situation to Officer Rivera. He made special arrangements for me to drive down to the basement and enter a closer door so that my mother would have a shorter distance to walk. Sometimes it is the little details like this that make all the difference! Thank you!

Just a quick note to say thank you for your most excellent and informative technician at Stein Eye Center, Marco Rivera. Mr. Rivera could not have made my experience more pleasant and quick! I hope you will thank him for all that he did to help me. Thank you!

I came into the ER on Saturday, 12/12, to check complications with my sore throat. Though I was unable to speak at the time, I was extraordinarily grateful for the care given to me by Nurse Melinda McMahon. After I was taken into the ER, due to lack of rooms I was placed into a temporary partitioned area for several hours. Melinda very kindly administered all of my bloodwork and patiently worked to find my dehydrated veins to attach an IV. She checked in on me frequently, despite it being a packed ER, making sure that I was as comfortable as possible. Also, Melinda's COVID swabbing skills were impeccable, because it barely hurt at all. Melinda's compassion towards me in all the small ways really made a world of difference while I was undergoing immense suffering yesterday, yet I was unable to thank her for that, so I wanted to do so now. Thank you, Melinda, for your care towards me.

Dr. Reed treated my brother who is a very complicated individual and difficult to get to open up. Dr. Reed handled him with skill and made him feel comfortable. I was really impressed with his treatment.

Dr. Dale J.

Dr Jun is a very professional, patient, excellent doctor. He takes time to listen to everything you have to say and then takes steps to try and find the cause. I like that he doesn't order a slew of tests at one time, but instead he does them one at a time and then reviews the results before deciding whether or not another test is needed. He gets in touch with you after the test results and explains what the results mean and what necessary steps need to be taken. I am very pleased that he is my pulmonologist.

Dr. Dorcas Chi has truly been a life-saver and exceptional mental cheerleader & guardian angel to me in the yearlong battle with an aggressive & extremely complex form of breast cancer. I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form (Her2+)/more complex form of breast cancer back in Nov 2019. Although my 2019 health insurance didn't cover for the care, Dr. Chi's exceptional care team made it a priority to schedule the appointment first thing in 2020 and her team has been flexible and accommodating with my insurance situation considering the medical urgency! During the initial appointment (and many subsequent appointments after that), Dr. Chi has always demonstrated compassionate care, patience, professionalism, and her top-notched clinical knowledge in the field! Due to the complex situation of my case, I unfortunately didn't have much choice in the treatment plan..and Dr. Chi proactively scheduled my tube insertion procedure and efficiently scheduled the first treatment visit already! She understood the family concerns and was explaining the patient/family expectations very clearly and compassionately during the first visit. She even helped look for the wig information for me! She was able to facilitate the different types of treatments in a very effective and efficient manner. She chose the optimal treatment plan to target the aggressive form of my cancer immediately as we were battling with TIME..Despite the 10-month LONG combo treatment (chemo+ targeted therapy+ surgery+ radiation) journey and fatigue/exhaustion, I am definitely working towards recovery now & it wouldn't have been possible without Dr. Chi's gracious and professional care and her top-notched knowledge/experience in treating such a complex and aggressive state of cancer! Dr. Chi - THANK YOU for your compassionate care, patience, support, & professionalism in saving my life!! We can't believe a year has passed! Have a safe, healthy, & restful holiday season with your family!

We can't thank Dr. Russell Buhr enough for his outstanding care with my father. My dad always looks forward to going to his appointment/follow-up (which is rare because he hates seeing doctors). Dr. Buhr is very attentive, caring and always optimistic and supportive. He always responds to myuclahealth messages within the day and has provided above and beyond care. My dad has severe lung disease and after few years at Cedars we felt that we should seek every options at different institutions. We went to Stanford, Cedars, USC and landed at UCLA. Ever since being under Dr. Buhr's care, my dad's lung improved from 20% lung capacity to 36% and my dad just celebrated his 80th birthday over the weekend! Few years ago, we weren't sure if he would be here today. Its all because of Dr. Buhr!! I can list so many other times Dr. Buhr had made a difference with my dad's health but i'm sure we're not the only one he has worked miracles. Thank you, Dr. Buhr.

Overall office demeanor. Kind. Listens. Doesn't rush. Responds promptly to emails. Plus he hooked me up with VA/UCLA study to successfully get me off of Ambien. I would never have known of that Sleep Switch study if it wasn't for him and it was such a great program!

Dr. Chen, thank you for going above and beyond for my husband and me. First, in clinic you answered all my questions and ensured I felt comfortable about the entire process. But not only were you an expert surgeon and guide for my hernia surgery -- unexpectedly, when my husband Jay collapsed in the waiting room, your help, support and check ins were absolutely crucial. You immediately checked in on him and took him to the ED personally. Especially during covid-19 when activity/communication inside the hospital environment is challenged/limited, you made sure we were kept up to date with his cardiac event and next steps. Very grateful for all you do, for all of us.

Gwendolyn "Gwen"

Gwen, thank you for taking care of my twin brother (Vincent) as if he was your family member. We don't even have the words to thank you enough. You showed all of us compassion, optimism and kindness, which did not go unnoticed. You had reminded us that it is not only the big deeds that bring notice to one's compassion for another but it is in the small details and behaviors that we display. Your periodic visits with Vincent and finding commonalities to remind him that he was not just a patient but he was a son, father and friend was very much appreciated. He enjoyed your many visits and conversations. Above all, we appreciate the empathy you displayed towards us during his stay. Your hugs went a long way and melted away the stresses in those precarious moments. We will never forget you! Please keep your phone chain going (wink). Thank you so much for your bravery, your sacrifices, and your unflagging compassion. Health care workers (you) are heroes, and we wouldn't be able to get through this time without you.

Vincent was truly grateful for all you did for him and so did our family (Nichole, Mom, Dad, Sister and Brother, etc.). We appreciate that you continued to encourage Vincent during his routine daily walks. You truly are such an amazing person and a hero. You always went above and beyond for Vincent and us. You are so important so please don't stop being who you are because the world needs you. You were there when Vincent took his last breath and we will forever be grateful and never forget you. Thank you for everything including your prayers, gospel music, conversations and rides back to the apartment!
