Library
The Library houses a collection of books and periodicals related to ophthalmology. The capacious reading and work area is augmented by display racks and moving-aisle storage. Study carrels include computer terminals, personal computers, printers, audiovisual cassette players, and a slide viewer. The Library computers provide access to the Internet, to medical and general scientific journal citation databases, and to book and journal catalog information for all UCLA libraries. The Library houses the offices of the Librarian, the Research Programs staff, and the Scientific Editor. It also contains a small conference room; a larger conference room is in an adjacent area.
Jules Stein Auditorium and Conference Center
An impressive Auditorium and Conference Center for professional and community educational programs is located between the Jules Stein and Doris Stein buildings. The Research to Prevent Blindness Auditorium, a combined lecture hall and theatre seating 156 people, offers sophisticated audiovisual equipment and language translation space. The adjacent Adam Room, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Oppenheimer, is reconstructed from an 18th century English house. It provides a unique setting for select conferences. Facilities for food service and other amenities supporting education programs for the UCLA School of Medicine and the community are part of the complex.
Microsurgery Teaching Laboratory
The ophthalmic microsurgery laboratory provides a variety of research and clinical education services for Institute faculty, staff, residents and fellows. Accredited by the Chancellor's Animal Research Committee, the laboratory affords principal investigators and their researchers a central surgical area for animal ocular experimentation. The laboratory also forms an integral part of the Institute's clinical teaching programs. It is used for the first-year resident's microsurgery course. Under the guidance of volunteer clinical faculty members, residents learn basic procedures such as ectropian and entropian repair, lacrimal system probing and surgery, extracapsular cataract extraction, phacoemulsification and corneal transplantation. The laboratory is a resource that enables residents and fellows to hone their surgical skills throughout their training. It hosts two major conferences each year-the intraocular lens-phacoemulsification conference and the aesthetic eyelid and orbitofacial surgery conference.
