Training at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System
The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System provides care to veterans living in a broad catchment area extending from the central coast of California to north of Bakersfield to South and East Los Angeles. Its inpatient facility is based in West Los Angeles and is one of the largest inpatient facilities in the VA system, providing comprehensive services including neurosurgical and cardiothoracic surgery.
Infectious diseases fellows rotating on the inpatient consult service at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center will gain experience in managing patients with multiple comorbidities, postsurgical infections, complicated soft tissue infections, osteomyelitis, and endovascular infections. The Infectious Diseases Section of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System maintains a robust antimicrobial stewardship program that can serve as the source of scholarly projects for fellows. Infectious diseases fellows also rotate at several outpatient clinics within the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System that are devoted to general infectious diseases, HIV primary care, and viral hepatitis.
Research and academic interests of faculty affiliated with the Infectious Diseases Section of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System include antimicrobial stewardship implementation and education (locally and nationally), HIV and aging, leptospirosis, rapid pathogen identification, immunology, cryptococcal and candidal infections, staphylococcal infections, viral hepatitis, hospital epidemiology, and anaerobic infections.
