Quality of Life
Although the expectation exists that residents work hard, we recognize that a high quality of life is paramount to any residency training experience.
The greater Los Angeles metropolitan area is home to a rich variety of cultural and recreational opportunities and activities, and our residents have ample to time to explore them. In fact, the Westwood district, which is immediately adjacent to our primary treatment center, is in the heart of the UCLA undergraduate area and boasts numerous highly rated restaurants and entertainment venues. Residents also have discounted rates to multiple UCLA programs and amenities, including access to the state of the art campus gyms and sporting events.
Further, while commuting in Southern California can be admittedly time-consuming, most residents are able to live comfortably within 5-10 minutes of campus. On a more practical note, all residents receive a meal stipend for use at any on-campus dining facilities, which is usually sufficient for a large portion of the year. In accordance with ACGME policy, residents also receive four weeks of paid-vacation time during each academic year. There are numerous other house staff benefits, including excellent insurance plans. A strong emphasis is also placed on inter-departmental social functions including holiday parties, intramural athletic teams, and outdoor outings. Workshops on work-life balance, time management, sleep/fatigue, and stress reduction occur annually throughout the year.
Living in Los Angeles
One of greatest cities in the world, Los Angeles is cosmopolitan, sophisticated, and laid-back all at the same time. Whether it’s the beach, the fashion, the entertainment, or the culture, the city has truly something for everybody. UCLA is centrally located in the heart of Westwood Village immediately surrounded by the luxurious west-side communities of Beverly Hills, Brentwood, and Bell Air. Within easy driving distance to the beach, the mountains, and downtown, the campus is located approximately 12 miles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and 20 miles from Burbank-Bob Hope Airport (BUR). Other world-class destinations in proximity include Malibu, Hollywood, Santa Barbara, and the Santa Monica Mountains. Boasting year-round sunshine and balmy weather, one would be hard-pressed to think of a more picturesque place to train.
