Hair loss can be emotionally devastating to both men and women alike. Moreover, symptoms including flaking, itching, or pain of the scalp can be experienced (either alone or in conjunction with hair loss). The UCLA Hair and Scalp Disorder Clinic was founded by Dr. Carolyn Goh and aims to address these concerns in a non-judgmental, safe environment. The first step is proper diagnosis, which sometimes requires at least two scalp biopsies. Laboratory work-up is sometimes necessary to exclude underlying medical problems that can contribute to hair loss including, but not limited to: thyroid disease, anemia, vitamin D deficiency, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. The majority of the time, there is no underlying illness. Treatment options will be discussed on a case-by-case basis, but options explored include topical therapies, intralesional corticosteroid injections and oral medications.
Bringing in any prior biopsy results (including the slides if possible) and laboratory work-up, particularly complete blood count, ferritin, vitamin D (25-OH), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO Ab), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is helpful.
