When to consider consultation or transfer to an ECMO center?
While the decision to transfer a patient to an ECMO center is a difficult one, early consultation with one of our ECMO specialists is the best way to optimize patient outcomes. Several factors including other patient factors, chance for recovery without ECMO and geographic distance as well as bed availability will be considered and discussed with the referring physician. Early referral will allow for safer transport and better decision making once the referral is made.
