Traumatic brain injury is one of the most common neurological diseases. This injury takes many forms and goes by different names: head injury, concussion, traumatic brain injury, closed head impact, penetrating brain injury. The common mechanism in traumatic brain injury is that the brain is directly injured by a force. This force can be a direct penetrating injury, such as a bullet wound, or rapid movement of the head, such as in motor vehicle or sports accidents.

UCLA Neurology has faculty member clinicians, Dr. Kevin Bickart and Dr. Joshua Kamins, who are trained in traumatic brain injury as a sub-specialty of neurology. These neurologists specialize in the effects of this injury and in secondary problems, such as headache or behavioral changes. UCLA Neurology partners with UCLA's Departments of Pediatrics' and Neurosurgery's UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program through education of its residents and fellows. For adolescent TBI, please see the BrainSPORT Program.
