Clinic Overview
The Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Clinic provides evaluation, consultation, prevention, and treatment services for children and family members affected by trauma and other challenging events, including medical illness, traumatic loss, community violence, disasters, and combat deployment stress. Comprised of a team of psychiatrists and psychologists specializing in children and adolescents, including advanced mental health trainees, the clinic provides expertise in child and family traumatic stress care for children of all ages and their family members. Specialized individual, family, and group interventions build on family strengths, teach new skills to manage stress and challenges, and mitigate the consequences of stressful and/or traumatic experiences.
Individual Therapy
The STAR Clinic offers time-limited individual psychotherapies to children, adolescents, and families to address symptoms related to trauma and stress. Interventions are primarily evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) and strength-based interventions. Caregiver and parent interventions, including parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), are designed to enhance existing strengths, manage challenging behaviors, and improve caregiver-child interactions. The clinic also offers FOCUS (Families OverComing Under Stress), a family resilience training program designed to build on existing strengths, recognize and manage emotions, and enhance family communication and problem solving.
Group Therapy
The STAR Clinic offers groups designed to support caregivers and children who have experienced stress and traumatic events. The STAR Family Group, designed for children ages 8-13 and their caregivers, offers skills to manage stress and challenges and to bolster caregiver-child relationships. The STAR Super Parenting! Group is designed to support caregivers with school-aged children (ages 5-12) who have experienced stress, anxiety, or worry. Over twelve sessions, caregivers strengthen their parenting skills and learn new strategies to help their children manage stress and anxiety.
Integrated Medication Management
Integrated psychiatric evaluation and medication management services are offered in conjunction with evidence-based psychotherapies. Evaluations are conducted by advanced trainees under the supervision of board-certified psychiatrists who are clinical faculty.
