Neuropalliative care is a field of medicine focused on improving the quality of life for patients and families living with serious neurologic disease.
Neuropalliative care involves a holistic approach to care, with attention to a person's emotional, spiritual, as well as medical needs. Neuropalliative care is not only for patients near the end of life but at any stage of their illness.
Services provided include:
- Symptom management for neurologic disease, including pain management.
- Help for patients and families to plan for the future, including continuing or changing course of treatment, anticipating future physical and emotional changes, and completion of advance care directives.
- Emotional and spiritual support for patients, families, and caregivers.
- Help with managing transitions in care, including to home health and hospice when appropriate.
Our neuropalliative care program is led by Dr. Cara Siegel, a neurologist and palliative medicine specialist.
Dr. Siegel sees patients with stroke, movement disorders including Parkinson's Disease, brain tumors and cancers with brain metastases, ALS and other neuromuscular diseases, multiple sclerosis, dementia, and more.
Dr. Siegel’s care and treatment are often in collaboration with other caregivers and neurologists. Neuropalliative care may be a one-time visit or ongoing care, depending on the needs of the patient and family.
