Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE)
The Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) is a structured process designed to assess the competence of newly appointed medical staff members and those requesting additional privileges. This evaluation ensures that all practitioners meet the medical center’s high standards for safe and high-quality patient care.
Who Needs FPPE?
FPPE applies to:
✔ Newly appointed medical staff members. As outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws, all Provisional members shall undergo a period of focused professional practice evaluation (proctoring) to evaluate their proficiency in exercising the clinical privileges provisionally granted
✔ Existing staff requesting additional privileges or using new technologies.
How the FPPE Process Works
- Each new provider is assigned a proctor—an experienced practitioner with the relevant privileges and has completed proctorship themselves will observe and evaluate the practitioner’s clinical performance. Please work with your Department, Service or Division with assistance in finding a qualified proctor.
- Evaluation methods may include*:
- Concurrent Proctorship – Proctor must be present when the practitioner is performing the privilege.
- Direct observation of procedures.
- Retrospective review of medical records
- Other appropriate measures to validate clinical competence
- The evaluation occurs within the clinical setting where the provider delivers patient care.
*The Proctorship Plan will detail what evaluation method will be used for each privilege.
Timeline for Completion
- New Applicants: The FPPE Proctorship Plan must be completed within the first year of appointment, with a goal of completion within 120 days of initiation.
- Existing Physicians Adding a New Privilege: The proctorship plan must be completed within one year of approval.
- Missed Deadlines:
- New applicants risk termination of their medical staff appointment.
- Existing medical staff may become ineligible to maintain the new privilege.
- If additional time is needed, please contact your at least three months before the deadline.
