Construction Safety
Construction Impact Risk Assessment (CIRA) PDF
Before a construction project takes place, a CIRA must be completed and approved by Health System Facilities, Epidemiology and EH&S. Construction Project Managers are responsible for developing the scope of construction for renovation projects, managing projects and ensuring they are performed in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM)
ILSMs are implemented to compensate for significant deficiencies and hazards that may be a result of ongoing construction activities. The Health System Facilities Department, in collaboration with The Office of Environmental Health & Safety, determines the need for and duration of ILSMs.. The need is based in large part on specific criteria, which are presented in Policy HS 8405 Interim Life Safety Measures (PDF). The need for ILSMs is considered when a project impacts or requires any of the following life safety conditions or measures:
- Maintain exits clear and unobstructed
- Maintain access for emergency response
- Maintain all fire systems in good working order
- Erect temporary smoke barriers where needed
- Provide additional firefighting equipment and training staff on their use
- Prohibit smoking in the work site
- Maintain good housekeeping, storage practices and clearing debris
- Conduct fire drills as needed
- Increase surveillance rounds of the area(s) under construction or renovation
- Provide staff training regarding construction impacts
- Inform staff of life safety deficiencies and hazards caused by the construction or renovations
Contractor’s Handbook (PDF)
The handbook summarizes safety procedures and other pertinent information that will be useful to the contractor performing work at UCLA Health. The contractor and its subcontractors are responsible for this information and it represents the expectation of the Hospital Administration and UCLA Capital Projects. This information is provided as supplementary to the project plans and specifications.
