Available Opportunities
Once you are accepted into the program, as a Volunteen, you may begin your volunteering in the following critical areas:
Patient Transport
Patient Transport volunteers are responsible for discharging patients, assisting in transfers, and helping the patient transport staff. This is a great opportunity for students to see all areas of the hospital and get clinical exposure. Shifts are available seven days a week anytime between 8A-8P.
Wayfinding
Wayfinders are student ambassadors. Wayfinders are stationed at hospital entrances and greet each visitor/patient along with providing wheelchair and escort assistance. Wayfinders must be friendly, proactive, and have good communication and customer service skills. 2-hour shifts are available Monday-Friday between 8:00am - 4:00pm. Due to the standing nature of this position, 4 hours will be rewarded for 2 hours of Wayfinding service.
Floater
Volunteers help deliver patient mail and newspapers. The assignments can change each shift depending on needs of department . Volunteers are assigned to the Volunteer Office for one, four-hour shift per week between 9:00 am - 4:00 am on Monday through Friday (weekends are not available).
What is the time commitment?
A minimum of 50 hours. Volunteers will design a schedule that best fits his or her availability.
Qualification and Health Requirements
- Minimum age 16 years old (MUST BE 16 AT THE DATE OF REGISTRATION)
- Agreement to volunteer 50 hours
- Proof of Varicella, MMR, TB and be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19. Please click here for detailed information on health requirements.
- New acceptable COVID vaccinations for volunteers:
Individuals must either have the most recent COVID vaccine
OR
- Complete a declination in volunteer portal
- A valid, government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport)
- If you currently hold a non-immigrant VISA or VISA Waiver status, our office is only approved to process international students who are full-time matriculating UCLA Students on F-1 Visas issued by Dashew Center
Applying to the Summer Volunteen Program
*Please plan and anticipate visiting the medical center at least 2 times prior to volunteering*
Step 1: Sign-up for a mandatory Information Session via zoom. Sign up's are currently closed. Sign-up's are on a first come, first serve basis. The pre-registration for Summer 2024 is CLOSED. Our next recruitment cycle will be in 2025, and we will have more updates in January 2025. Please check our website then.
Step 2: Applications will be emailed to those who attend the Information Session. (Please do not share application link with anyone, their applications will not be accepted).
Step 3: Gather all required forms, documents and proof of immunizations and submit online for review and approval.
Step 4: Attend one mandatory In-Person Orientation(see dates below). This is the only session, we will not have make-up sessions.

Step 5: Complete 50 volunteer hours by August 31, 2024.
If you cannot attend the Information Session or attend the Orientation, please reconsider volunteering. *Dates are not interchangeable.

Volunteer Requirements
Our policy for maintaining volunteer status stands as such: Inactivity for three months (or 90 days) will automatically deactivate your status. You must re-apply to join the program again. This policy applies to both year-round and summer-only volunteers.
Parking: Please note that we are unable to provide free parking for student volunteers.
